European Communities Council Directive 90 219 EEC on the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms, 1990

This Council Directive structured measures on the contained use of genetically modified microorganisms in order to prevent or minimize possible negative impacts on health and environment. The 1990 Directive classified microorganisms with levels of hazard; described the notification procedures; established a register of the accidents.

The European regulations on GMOs had major amendments (on procedure, containment and list of no-risk GMOs) after 90/219, with Directive 98/81/EC.
